Derby shoes has a couple of synonyms, such as Gibson shoes and Blucher shoes. Whatever you choose to call it, it is an important variation to be aware of when looking at shoe construction. In essence, like the Oxford, leather Derby shoes are defined by the way the lacing and eyelets close the shoe. The closing panels are sewn on top of the vamp (top of the shoe) giving the shoe a more solid appearance and more room for the larger foot and higher instep. Quite often this construction is used for country styles, such as Derby brogues and boots, as the lacing gives more room and flexibility for wearing a thick sock. The Gibson lacing also adds visual bulk which complements a wider and chunkier style. That is the reason that many Derby shoes and boots are on rounded lasts.
